
Super apps in Asia proved the power of the "all in one" concept. In Europe and the US, though, the same model runs into different user habits, trust issues, and regulation. That's why a different question may be more interesting for designers: not how to design a super app, but how to design a super interface.
In Europe, the term "super app" doesn't mean much to most people. Not because it's a bad concept, but because we're not used to it. Western users know "specialized apps": one for chat, another for banking, a third for transport, a fourth for shopping. And when you say "everything in one", it often sounds more like chaos than convenience.
Yet super apps actually target a very specific problem: friction in our digital lives. And it's not just about tapping different icons on the home screen. It's about switching context, identity, payments, trust, and permissions – and that's exactly where UX tends to hurt.
What a super app is (translated for Europeans)
You can think of super apps like WeChat, Grab, Gojek, and many others as an "operating system inside an app". One place where you communicate, pay, order, manage services, and often even launch third-party mini apps inside the main shell.

The important thing is that a super app typically doesn't win by having more features. It wins by reducing the number of steps between "I want" → "I have". That's the UX shortcut: fewer sign-ups, fewer redirects, less repetitive form-filling, less payment friction, less wondering "where do I actually do this".
WeChat: Why it works in the East
WeChat – a multi-purpose app developed by China's Tencent for more than a billion active users – is the iconic example, but what really matters is understanding the context in which such an app could grow.
China was long a "late mover" in internet adoption, and its massive growth happened at a time when habits were still forming and mobile internet was just going mainstream. CNNIC, for example, reports the country crossing 100 million internet users as early as 2005, with further acceleration in the years that followed. Mobile internet and the arrival of 3G then opened the door to "mobile-first" services at scale.
In an environment like that, it's more natural for users to embrace "one place for everything" – especially when it also lowers barriers in communication, payments, and everyday services. Nor can we ignore the fact that a centralized approach to design and data goes hand in hand with centralized politics and control.

Europe: Why it failed in the West
1) Mental models: Specialization as the default
For some people, the biggest pain really isn't tapping a different icon. From a UX perspective, though, the problem is often not the physical switch but the mental and process noise: where's my order, where's my account, where's the invoice, where are the notifications, where's support, where do I file a complaint. A super app is essentially competing with how much users value the simple rule of "one app = one role". And that's culturally conditioned. Once established categories and strong brands already exist, a super app has to convince users that centralization is a benefit – not a risk.
2) The EU: Data and fair design are a tougher discipline
In the EU, the main obstacle isn't just "having everything in one app" – it's that such a product naturally wants to connect data across domains. GDPR, however, is built on the principle that data should serve a clear purpose and that only the necessary minimum should be collected. That makes a universal ecosystem harder to explain, harder to get consent for, and harder to trust. On top of that, there's growing scrutiny of manipulative interfaces (dark patterns), so the growth hacks that often show up in super apps are riskier in the EU.
3) The US: Fewer rules, more uncertainty
The US has no single federal framework like GDPR – rather a patchwork of state-level rules and oversight (typically by the FTC). In practice, this means a company can get off the ground faster, but it faces far more legal uncertainty in the details, plus reputational risk: the moment an app wants to be a social network, a wallet, and a marketplace all at once, both users and regulators become much more sensitive about what happens with the data and whether the product is legally sound.

Western attempts: more "bundle" than true super app
In the West, the super app model often breaks down because instead of "one app for everything", what emerges is a family of apps under one brand. Facebook is the typical example: chat was originally part of Facebook, but communication was gradually split off into the standalone Messenger app. The result is more of a "bundle" (Facebook + Messenger) than a super app in one.
In mobility and delivery, you can see "use-case bundling" within a single vertical. Uber remains an example of an app that keeps adding everyday needs around mobility (rides and delivery). In Europe, Bolt is a good parallel: Bolt for rides/mobility on one side, Bolt Food for food delivery on the other – two apps, one brand, one ecosystem. That's the Western pattern: not a WeChat-style super app, but portfolio expansion and an effort to reduce friction because you're already "in their world".

And then there's the "everything app" narrative around X. In 2025, the company announced a partnership with Visa for X Money and a push toward financial features. But it also exposes the main weakness of the Western approach: without trust – from users and advertisers alike – any centralization is fragile.
And Meta? Its grand payments vision, Diem, ended with an asset sale and the project being shut down. A textbook example of "we'll build our own infrastructure and then plug it into our apps" running into regulatory and political resistance.
Super app vs. super interface: takeaways for design
Maybe the West doesn't need a super app so much as a "super interface". And that's where the UX game changer of recent years comes in: ChatGPT-style interfaces acting as the "bartender at the bar". The user doesn't think about where things get done. They say what they want – and the "bartender" (the agent) takes care of it: opens the right service, fills everything in, makes the choices, confirms, and brings them their drink.
For design, this means a shift from "I'm designing one app" to "I'm designing an ecosystem and its behavior": the interface has to be able to safely talk to other services and carry context across them without the user losing control.
And a new discipline is emerging: accessibility for AI. Not in the WCAG (Web Content Accessibility Guidelines) sense, but in the sense of "how usable is my service for an agent": clear actions, consistent naming, stable deep links, understandable states, predictable errors, auditable steps. This is exactly the kind of work where design stops being just about pixels and becomes much more about orchestration.

The takeaway for companies: strategy, not a feature set
If a company in the EU/US is considering a super app approach today, it realistically has two paths:
a) Either build a bundle around one strong core value (money, transport, health, and so on) and add services gradually, so it doesn't end up feeling like a random pile of icons. That's mostly a matter of information architecture, trust, and the pace of expansion.
b) Or build a "super interface": don't centralize everything into a single app, but give users one human entry point (conversation, intent, an agent) while keeping the modularity of specialized services underneath.
In either case, the key for UX is that integration must never feel forced. And in the EU, you also have to design so the whole thing doesn't fall apart over dark patterns, consumer protection, or GDPR. Which is quite the challenge.
